Mission Statement"Growing a community with a mission to make disciplesby the power of God, and to the Glory of God"
The Gospel- We believe that both believers and nonbelievers need to hear the Gospel preached on a very regular basis. Nonbelievers need to hear it for salvation, and believers need to hear it because our thought patterns are naturally inclined towards works-centered religion. It is through the Gospel that we begin our relationship with Christ, and it is through the Gospel that our relationship with him is deepened. As pastor Timothy Keller states, "The Gospel is not just the way to enter the kingdom, but the way to address every problem and is the way to grow at every step."
Cultural Relevance- This refers to the atmosphere and music style, but even more it refers to how the message is communicated and what topics are discussed. It is important that the message is delivered in a manner that the people can easily understand. Also, each culture has their own unique stumbling blocks that keep them from the gospel, and part of being culturally relevant means regularly addressing these issues.
"By the power of God..." As our mission statement proclaims, we are passionate about praying for and experiencing the power of the Holy Spirit. This does not necessarily refer to charismatic gifts as much as it refers to charismatic faith and guidance. In every endeavor we set out to do, we aim to have an attitude of expectancy. Whether it is evangelism, preaching, worship, or any other ministry of the church, it is our goal that we do it with the faith that God is with us, and the expectancy that God will guide and empower us. This is an idea that we will regularly teach, because too often we fall into the habit of trying to do ministry by our own strength. In everything we do, we hope to do it by the power of God.
"...for the glory of God" It is our prayer and our expectation that the ministries of Downtown Mission Church will display God's glory. As we proclaim God's love, power, righteousness, holiness, justice, goodness, wrath, wisdom, sovereignty, and mercy, we expect that it will be done with the Christ-exalting power that will fill both believers and nonbelievers with a sense of awe. We believe that it is this glory that convicts people of their sinfulness, and we believe that it is this glory that draws them to the Savior. We recognize the fact that this is not something we can create on our own, but we believe that God wants us to have faith that he will use us to glorify himself.
Church Planting- The most effective way of bringing souls to Christ is through church planting. For this reason, we will regularly preach and teach on the importance of church planting, and our prayer is that God would raise up church planters from within our church that would be trained and sent out.
Authentic Love- Without love, everything we do is in vain. (1 Cor. 13) Love is the greatest commandment, and our desire is that it will be clear to all, even to those that may oppose us, that we are a community that truly loves God and truly loves people. And as the people see this love, they will know that our God is real. (John 17:20-23, John 13:35). Even the most broken and ashamed will feel loved and welcome at Downtown Mission Church.
Affirmation of FaithAffirmation of FaithThe Word of GodWe believe that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that it has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. The TrinityWe believe that there is one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons, that these are equal in every divine perfection, and that they execute distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation, providence and redemption.God the FatherWe believe in God the Father, an infinite personal spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power, and love. We believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, that He hears and answers prayer, and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.Jesus ChristWe believe in Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles and teachings. We believe in His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people, and personal visible return to earth. The Holy SpiritWe believe in the Holy Spirit who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify, and empower all who believe in Jesus Christ. We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Christ, and that He is an abiding helper, teacher and guide.RegenerationWe believe that all men are sinners by nature and by choice and are, therefore, under condemnation. We believe that those who repent of their sins and trust in Jesus Christ as Savior are regenerated by the Holy Spirit. The ChurchWe believe in the universal church, a living spiritual body of which Christ is the head and all regenerated persons are members. We believe in the local church, consisting of a company of believers in Jesus Christ, baptized on a credible confession of faith and associated for worship, work and fellowship. We believe that God has laid upon the members of the local church the primary task of giving the gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost world.Christian ConductWe believe that a Christian should live for the glory of God and the well-being of his fellow men; that his conduct should be blameless before the world; that he should be a faithful steward of his possessions; and that he should seek to realize for himself and others the full stature of maturity in Christ. The OrdinancesWe believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has committed two ordinances to the local church: baptism and the Lord's Supper. We believe that Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water into the name of the triune God. We believe that the Lord's Supper was instituted by Christ for commemoration of His death. We believe that these two ordinances should be observed and administered until the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.Religious LibertyWe believe that every human being has direct relations with God and is responsible to God alone in all matters of faith; that each church is independent and must be free from interference by any ecclesiastical or political authority; that therefore Church and State must be kept separate as having different functions, each fulfilling its duties free from dictation or patronage of the other.Church CooperationWe believe that local churches can best promote the cause of Jesus Christ by cooperating with one another in a denominational organization. Such an organization, whether it is the Conference or a district conference, exists and functions by the will of the churches. Cooperation in a conference is voluntary and may be terminated at any time. Churches may likewise cooperate with interdenominational fellowships on a voluntary independent basis. The Last ThingsWe believe in the personal and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to earth and the establishment of His kingdom. We believe in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment, the eternal felicity of the righteous, and the endless suffering of the wicked.Adopted by the Converge Worldwide 1951 and reaffirmed in 1990.
